Tax Planning
Looking at your tax return as a planning document, not just a filing.
Most people only think about taxes once a year, when it's time to file. We think about them differently. Your tax return tells a story about your financial life, and reading that story carefully, year after year, is one of the most useful things we do together. This isn't about finding loopholes or chasing complexity — it's about paying attention, all year long, to decisions that have tax consequences down the road, and making those decisions on purpose instead of by accident.
Thinking ahead, not just filing behind
Once you're retired, you likely have more than one place money can come from: a 401(k) or IRA, a brokerage account, maybe a Roth account, Social Security. Which account you draw from, and when, can make a real difference over time. We help you think through that order thoughtfully, as part of your overall plan, rather than pulling from whatever account is easiest.
We also like to talk about Roth conversions — not as a one-size-fits-all move, but as a concept worth considering during years when your income happens to be lower. There can be a window, especially early in retirement, where it may make sense to explore. Whether it does depends on your specific situation.
Planning around required withdrawals
At a certain point, the government requires withdrawals from most retirement accounts. Those withdrawals affect your taxable income, sometimes more than people expect. We help you understand what's coming and think through it well before it arrives, rather than reacting after the fact.
Your return as a planning document
Each year, we look at your tax return not as a box to check, but as information. It tells us what worked, what to watch for, and what might be worth adjusting going forward.
